Archaeologists: Ancient Siberian surgeons operated tools that were not available in Europe

Novosibirsk, archaeologists found that 2.5 thousand years ago, surgeons in South Siberia was carried out complex operations, including craniotomy. In doing so they have the tools that were not available in Europe, the press service of the Novosibirsk State University.
“In the arsenal of the surgeon the end of the first millennium BC, was operating a knife for cutting bone saws, cutting tools, tweezers, medical probes and analogue modern Scalpel - Lancet. Most of these tools in the form and functionally similar to the instruments of European surgeons the same time. The only exception - saws, which are not found in this period in Europe, “- led the press service quoted a leading researcher of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography Pavel Volkov.

Scientists have studied artifacts from the collection of the Minusinsk regional museum of local lore. NM Martyanova. The ancient surgical instruments were found in the monuments of the Tagar culture of the period of IV-III centuries BC. He also studied the footprints on the surface of the trepan skulls (IV-III centuries. BC. E.) And compared them with traces of wear and tear of a number of artifacts that could be used in medical operations in the early Iron Age on the territory of Siberia.
Thus, the scientists found that the ancient surgeons use special operational knives for cutting bone. “The guns of this type left in cutting bones footprints similar to those observed in the trepan turtles” - said Volkov. Also among the arsenal of ancient doctors discovered a special saw, which have no analogues in the European archaeological collections.
They also found in the collections of the Minusinsk Museum of Local History tweezers and tools that could be used as medical probes. According to him, workers smoothed edge tools and retain traces characteristic of the instruments came into contact with a relatively long period of time “soft organic material.”

“The combination of these tools can be considered quite sufficient, probably typical, tools surgeon practicing at the end of the last millennium BC. The morphology and function of guns near the European” - said the archaeologist. He added that that the ways in which the exchange of medical experience was between people living so separately, - an occasion for more detailed archaeological studies. “But it is obvious that the inhabitants of the south of Siberia during this period has a complex knowledge in surgery, not inferior to ancient Roman and Greek surgeons” - summed up the Wolves.
Tagartsy lived in VIII-III century BC in the steppes of southern Siberia, in the territory of Khakass-Minusinsk basin (Republic of Khakassia and the southern regions of the Krasnoyarsk Territory).
