The Chinese have created a beef, fish rich in fatty acids

Nutritionists are constantly encouraged to include in your daily diet of lean fish. The bodies of marine life rich in long-chain fatty acids, which are beneficial to the different systems of the human body.

However, not everyone can afford to eat fish, and today the protein part of the diet of many people is predominantly meat. Beef is the most popular type of meat, rich in short chain fatty acids, which are not so good for your health, as they are long-chain analogs (and red meat at all bad).

Chinese scientists in the framework of its new research put together artificially favor of fish and meat, beef creating rich in long-chain fatty acids. Brief description of the study described in a press release.

Fish is the main source of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which protect against obesity, cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. Meat as short chain fatty acids called omega-6.

The research team from the Chinese at Northwestern University and the National Center for improving the quality of meat have decided to conduct an experiment to transform omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3. For this, they have seized the gene fat1 nematode worm, which encodes an enzyme desaturase that plays a key role in the transformation of omega-6 fatty acids in the omega-3.

This gene is introduced into embryos bulls Lax, who have been known to give a lot of meat. As a result, they were born calves that were in the body five times more omega-3 fatty acids than their unmodified counterparts. Unfortunately, 11 of the 14 calves died at the age of less than four months from hemorrhagic septicemia - widespread infection among cattle. So scientists have yet to improve their technique.

Cheng Gong (Gong Cheng), lead author of the new study agrees that the technique is far from perfect. However, he argues that just the first step has been taken, the scientists will soon learn how to create foods that will have an increased benefit to man.

Colleagues Cheng, who did not participate in this study, also offer to develop livestock feed, which is itself rich in omega-3 fatty acids. This, they believe, will not only provide useful meat, but also rich in long-chain fatty acids of milk.
