Scientists have developed a new method for measuring the refractive index of liquids and solids

The holding “Schwabe”, is part of the state corporation Rostec, invented a completely new way of measuring the differential refractive index of liquids and solids. The refractive index is one of the physical characteristics of the substance, a study which enables to determine the structure of complex molecules to judge types of chemical bonds between the atoms to establish a high degree of accuracy the percentage composition of gaseous and liquid mixtures, measured density, and others to study the diffusion phenomenon.

The specificity of the new method is that the refractive indices of the substance and measuring the prism may be similar or equal in size or the refractive index of an analyte may be greater than that of the prism. This allows use as a reference for similar or equal coefficients of thermal material - glass of liquid. Managed to achieve this result by placing an optical wedge between the analyte and the measuring prism.

The new method allows to measure the volume fraction of ethyl alcohol in various beverages, the amount of water-soluble substances in the flour, the percentage of protein in the milk or sucrose, in the juice; identify the concentration of drugs; determine the quality of petroleum products on various parameters - the percentage of aromatic hydrocarbons in the fuel, octane and cetane number, nagarny factor, the factor of smoke, smoke point.

Firstly, substantially reduces the need to control the temperature when carrying out research. Secondly, increases several times the sensitivity and accuracy. Thirdly, a new method is easy to use and maintain. For example, if refractometric unit will be designed as a flow cell, the measurement process can be continuous, “- said Deputy General Director of JSC” Schwabe “R & D and innovation Development Nicholas Rakovich.

According to him, a new method for measuring the differential refractive index of liquids and solids developed and successfully tested in practice by the specialists of “Schwabe - Technological Laboratory”, which is part of the holding. For his approbation was made several prototypes differential refractometer, which in the future will be mass-produced.
