Russia and Germany share the assessment of its role in the history of

Lead researcher at the Center for German Studies Institute of Europe, Russian Academy of Sciences Catherine Timoshenkova about problems with the formation of a positive image of Russia in the West, particularly in Germany and the conditions that could improve understanding between the parties and to reconcile their positions.

DW: Why is there a problem of creating a positive image of Russia abroad?

Catherine Timoshenkova: The problem of the image of Russia can not be considered accidental. This set of factors that determine the perception of the country abroad and have their roots in the distant history. One aspect of the difficulties encountered is that the Western media image of Russia is broadcast not the way it is seen by the Russians. The point of view advocated by Russia, does not correspond to that seen in the West.

Even before the Ukrainian crisis in 2013, the BBC study showed that the negative associations toward Russia prevail in 15 of the 25 countries participating in the survey. And the data of the German Institute of Sociological Research in Allensbach, published in April showed that 25 years after the end of the Cold War, despite the development of bilateral cooperation, 76 percent of Germans believe the relationship destroyed, while 55 per cent see the Russian threat.

Only 10 percent of respondents assessed as a reliable partner of the Russian Federation, although five years ago, the figure was five times more. Moreover, residents of the eastern lands belong to Russia with greater understanding than Western. This situation means that the measures accompanying the Russian government to create a positive image of the country, is clearly insufficient. Although the improvement of investment and tourist attractiveness of the country are investing a lot of money. Operating funds of Russian culture name and Gorchakov “Russian world”, allocated scholarships for foreign students working channel “Russia Today”, however, in Germany it is not yet broadcast transmission.
