Plant Chicago - vertical farm and food waste recycling

The Windy City is transformed into a greenhouse sustainable urban farming.

Entrepreneur John Edel (John Edel) intends to turn the plant in the industrial area of Chicago, where in the 1920s meat packed up in a completely new agricultural vertical farm, working on food waste.

John received a total of U.S. $ 1.5 million from the Department of Trade and economic opportunities of Illinois (Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO)).

Department allocated for two grants to support integrated renewable energy systems that will process up to 12,000 tons of food waste per year. Much of this material is brewer’s grain (the remainder of the wort), available from the brewery at the plant and from other breweries around Chicago - a material that is currently sent to landfill.

“These grants will help us to create 125 new jobs with green collar jobs in economically distressed localities and test a new economic model, which relies on the re-use of waste resources for food production. Moreover, we reduce the amount of CO2 that is sent into the atmosphere by 3000 tons annually, using a renewable energy source, “says Edel.

As explained John indoors using vertical spaces can be much more plant crops than in the horizontal plane.

“The plant will produce its own electricity and heat on site using proven technologies. Anaerobic bioreactor Our will use absolutely any food waste: wet brewer’s grain, vegetable waste, fat, process them and produce methane system for combined production of heat and electricity.
