In South America, dug up the saber-toothed squirrel from “Ice Age”

U.S. and Argentine paleontologists have discovered in South America, fossils of a mammal-like saber-toothed squirrel from a series of animated films “Ice Age” and presented it to the world in an article published in the journal Nature.

Roger Guillermo (Guillermo Rouger) from the University of Louisville (USA) and his colleagues note that the South American Sabertooth protein (Cronopio dentiacutus), in contrast to the heroine of the cartoon, there lived a very comfortable environment rainforest about 94 million years ago.

Roger and his colleagues found the skull and jaw of this animal in the formation Kandeleros in Patagonia - natural and historic areas in the south of Argentina. The rocks in this area were formed about 100 million years ago and belong to the so-called Cenoman - the end of the Cretaceous period. Paleontologists often found in this area remains small dinosaurs and other vertebrates, except mammals.

The authors have analyzed the structure of the skull and teeth of this animal, and concluded that it belonged to superorder Dryolestoidea - extinct relatives of modern subclass of Mammals (Theria), to which all existing marsupials and placental mammals.

South American Sabertooth protein differs from both of their immediate families from Africa, which was part of South America with a single southern continent of Gondwana, and from distant relatives in the northern continent - Laurasia.

Saber-toothed jaws of proteins contain several single-root of molars and premolars dvukorennyh that was not typical of all known mammals, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Canines Cronopio dentiacutus several times longer than all other teeth of this animal and scientists estimate, keep the brand championship among all canines of early mammals.

The skull of this creature is strongly elongated and somewhat flattened laterally, and his device at the same time suggests primitive saber-toothed squirrel and says high food specialization. Jaws proteins were relatively weak, but well revealed by the bite, which allowed the animal to use its fangs, “sword” in full force and effect.
