Finnish scientists: data on phone calls are best suited to evaluate the reciprocity of human relations

The relationship between two people in every fifth case, supported by one of the participants, who commits 80% of calls are attributable to two friends, Finnish researchers reported in a study published in the electronic library at Cornell University.

A group of researchers led by Lauri Forged (Lauri Kovanen) from the University of Aalto identified as “reciprocal” is the relationship between people in the community, assess their willingness to invest in these relationships through telephone calls to each other.

The authors regard the society as a social network, whose nodes - people, and the edges - relations between them. The concept of “reciprocity” are defined as the proportion of bilateral ties in the total number within the network.

The researchers analyzed data on 350 million calls made 5.3 million subscribers of one mobile network operator for 18 weeks. According to them, data on phone calls are best suited to assess the reciprocal relationship, because on the one hand, there is always the initiator of the call, but on the other hand, the recipient does not need to make a return call (as opposed to SMS-messages, where participants dialogue, exchange messages).
