U.S. scientists have created a solar fuel

A team of American scientists began experime[t:tag slug=opyt]experiments on the conversion of solar energy. For the experiment, experts built the earth’s solar model, able to transform carbon dioxide and water into fuel.

A team of researchers from the American University of Minnesota have developed a prototype reactor, which converts sunlight into fuel. Experimental model - the main planets of our system - represents a set of seven lamps with capacity of 6,5 thousand watts. With the help of special reflectors to light concentrated in one point of maximum diameter of 7.5 cm, with temperature in the reactor can not exceed 2 thousand? C.

As a result, heating cerium dioxide by sunlight (they are covered with special reflectors installed) is the splitting of water and carbon dioxide into hydrogen, which ka KrAZ and can be converted into liquid fuel. According to researchers, this process is completely environmentally sustainable. Under assumptions of scientists, hydrogen can be used as a fuel in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. And based on a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide can be created and used as fuel synthetic fuel gas. Preliminary work also showed that the plant can produce methane.

While the experimental setup is not effective and uses less than 1% of solar energy. Meanwhile, scientists know how to design a device with a level of performance up to 19%.
